Sleeper build

This build came from a simple idea, take something old and see what it can become.

But this one means a little more to me than most projects.

The case is from the first computer I ever had, and the parts inside came from the first gaming PC I built. So this isn’t just a random sleeper build.

The Build

Here’s what’s inside:

  • MSI B150M motherboard

  • Intel i5 (6th gen)

  • 8GB RAM

  • NVIDIA GTX 750 Ti

I’m running Ubuntu on it, which keeps everything fast and straightforward.

Why I Built It

This is a project I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.

The case has been sitting in my garage for years, just collecting dust. I always had the idea of turning it into something again, but never got around to it until now.

Once I finally had the motivation, it all came together pretty naturally.

The Process

Before anything else, the case needed a full cleanup.

Working for an electronics restoration company definitely helped here. I’ve spent a lot of time cleaning and bringing equipment back to life, so I was able to take what I’ve learned and apply it to this build. Getting the case cleaned up and usable again was honestly one of the most satisfying parts of the whole process.

After that, it was just a matter of fitting everything together and making it work in a space that wasn’t designed for modern hardware.

How It Turned Out

In the end, it turned into a really solid system.

Ubuntu runs smoothly, and the hardware handles everything I need it to. It’s mainly used as a display and control machine for my Proxmox cluster, which I’ll be breaking down in a separate post.

It’s also just a fun system to have around. Most people wouldn’t expect much from it, which makes it even better when it actually performs well.

Final Thoughts

This build is a reminder of how far I’ve come.

It takes something that used to be the starting point and turns it into something I can still use today. It’s not always about having the best hardware, it’s about building something that actually means something to you.

And this one definitely does.
